What got me into the role?
I know first-hand what it’s like to battle and overcome addictions and feel privileged to be able to pursue a career supporting others to do the same.
I was raised in and around a gang environment. As the son of a former Black Power member who followed in his father's footsteps and the brother of two Mongrel mob associates my journey in life hasn’t been easy. My blessing is that I am a whāngai baby and my whanau gave me opportunities that I am really grateful for. I don’t know where I would have ended up without them.
I am also very grateful to have met people in my life who did not judge my past, who supported and encouraged me to make positive change. That changed my life for the better and I want to use my role to offer that kind of support to our whanau.
Ko au ko koe, ko koe, ko au.
Aspirations while in the role
I have a few aspirations I would like to achieve within this role. Firstly is to learn, build and grow a strong foundation within mahi, our hapori, iwi and hāpu so that I am able to not only work to the best of my abilities, but also able to be a part of making a positive impact for our people.
I also think about the people who inspire me, Colin Kaepernick, Tupac, Conor Mcgregor, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson and one of the things that stand out to me is that they are comfortable in the face of adversity and work hard to make change possible. This is something I continuously aspire to bring in my daily practices.
