Hāpai have had the opportunity to be part of a number of mental health and addiction conversations regarding the Government’s mental health and addiction inquiry. We know that a high proportion of people who experience gambling harm may also have or experience mental health issues, stress, depression and anxiety being the most common. There is a need for cross-sector services collaborating to support a holistic approach for whānau and the community.
We all know how important host responsibility is in helping to reduce gambling harm for individuals, whānau and communities. Recently Sky City withdrew the requirement for excluded patrons to receive counselling before being readmitted to the Casino. We hope that the appropriate authority reconsiders this decision, as it is a lost opportunity for supporting people who experience gambling harm from receiving specialised gambling intervention treatment.
