This month's blog post features Vicki Berkhan, General Manager for Te Rangihaeata Oranga Trust, who provided this update after sharing some of the mahi, that the team at Te Rangihaeata have been focusing on, with the Central Regional Gamble JAM Networking hui.
Above is the public health team at Te Rangihaeata Oranga (Hawke’s Bay Gambling Harm Service).
We successfully pitched for a sinking lid policy for Hastings District in spite of submission numbers in favour of a cap system.
Our next Council is Napier whose proposed policy is a cap system in spite of recommendations from their Māori committee for a cap system. We learned from the Hastings experience and have close to 100 submissions in support of sinking lid plus no relocations – we completed the submission documents in advance for signing by the community and had whānau promote this kaupapa at a Waitangi Day event.
We are publically shaming Napier Council for ignoring the advice of their Māori committee – should be good viewing – watch the live streaming on 23 March!
